The Walk in Peachtree City is called Southern Crescent Alzheimer's Memory Walk as it consists of volunteers, walkers and runners from Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Fulton, Henry, Meriwether, Spalding and Troup Counties. The Walk this year will be held on October 2, the first Saturday in October. It is a 3.1 mile (5K) walk starting at the Frederick Brown, Jr., Amphitheater, 201 McIntosh Trail, following the cart path system along McIntosh Trail, crossing Peachtree Parkway, winding through the subdivisions and forests, and ending back at the Amphitheater parking lot. There will be golf carts stationed every one-half mile to return anyone to the parking lot of the amphitheater in the event they cannot walk the entire route. There will also be water stations at every mile.
There is also a short walk for the physically challenged, approximately 1/5 mile, just above the parking lot at the amphitheater.
Registration starts at 8:00 a.m. with the run/walk starting at 9:30 a.m. There is parking in the amphitheater parking lot and at the Huddleston School across the street in addition to along the side streets of McIntosh Trail. Peachtree City residents are encouraged to drive their golf carts which can be parked among the trees above the parking lot.
Upon arrival at the Walk site, you should go immediately to the Registration Tent and register either as an individual walker or as a member of a team and turn in your collection envelope money. If you turn in $150 or more, you will receive an official Alzheimer's Long Sleeve purple T-Shirt. (If you are eligible for any incentives and you check the box on your envelope you wish to redeem them, you will receive a code number around the end of November to select your gift on the internet.) You will also be given a slip of paper on which to print your name and drop in the drawing box for the drawing after the Walk. You are then free to visit the various sponsorship tables, munch on free breakfast items (coffee, water, juice, donuts, bananas, etc.) while listening to the music of Peachtree Jazz Edition until time to run or walk.
Upon your return to the Walk Site, you will be served a hot dog and hamburger lunch by the Peachtree City Kiwanis, free of charge. After everyone has returned, there will be a drawing for prizes and announcement of the total money received that day at the Walk Site.
It is a great family affair. We encourage you to bring your children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors, and pets, if you so desire. It is very important that we raise not only money, but awareness of this devastating disease that affects so many of our loved ones.
